The difference between Pages and Posts in WordPress

If you’re new to WordPress the first thing that you need to learn is the difference between Pages and Posts.
Basically there are two types of content in WordPress:

Pages are static web pages that do not (or rarely) change over the life of the web site.
Examples of typical pages are usually Contact Us, About Us.

Posts are generally a piece of news, an article or an entry in a journal etc

You can watch two YouTube video tutorials which explain the difference in more detail below

Choosing a great value, dependable reliable Web Host.

I have been using Bluehost to host all my web sites and WordPress blogs for 5 years now and have found them to be dependable and reliable with 99.9% up time and incredibly fast response time when it came to support issues.
I cannot speak highly enough of their support team, they even have live chat from their home page so you can get an instant response.
There is also a toll free support number which you can ring 24/7. Unfortunately its only toll free in the United States.
I have rung the number through Skype from Australia and the cost has been minimal. In 5 years I have only had to ring them once.
You can also submit a question to their help desk via their online form or visit their extensive FAQ section on their website.
Staff are knowledgeable and friendly, and provide great service around the clock to help you with all of your hosting needs.
BlueHost is obviously the best choice when it comes to Customer Support.

One of my favourite features offered by Bluehost is Simple Scripts.
Using Simple Scripts you can create dynamic database driven web sites within minutes …at the click of a mouse button!!
Easily install popular scripts and software such as blogs, forums, shopping carts and much more!!
You can have a WordPress Blog up and running within five minutes!!!
Previously I used a similiar application called Fantastico, which is still available and in the Bluehost Cpanel
Fantastico is available on almost all hosting companies deals that use Cpanel.
Fantatsico is good but the only problem I have found, is the length of time it takes for updates to be available. Sometimes it can take up to a month or even longer.
With Simple Scripts, all updates are available with 3- 7 days.
This is a big positive for Simple Scripts in my books, especially if its a security issue that needs to be updated!!

If you search for ‘Top rated web host plans’ you will find Bluehost comes up in the top 5 almost every time.
And Bluehost is always rated number one for customer support.

More reasons why you should choose Bluehost for all your hosting needs.

  • Value for money $6.95 per month
  • Free Domain name for every hosting account.
  • Unlimited disk space, flie transfer and bandwidth.
  • You can host unlimited domains or sites on one account

Choosing a good Domain Name

A domain name is a license to use a specific name on the Internet for a specific period of time (generally 1-2 years).
An example of a domain name is oceanartwork.com

Its easy to get sidetracked and go overboard when choosing a domain name.
Here are a few points that might make it easier for you.

  • Make it simple, domain names should be easy to remember, say, and spell.
  • Try to use words that describe or name your product in the domain name and busines . e.g If your business is  selling car tyres your ideal domain name would be yoursuburbcartyres.com  (although obvious names are going to be harder to procure.)
  • Register your business name with a few different extensions to protect your name and branding in as many popular name spaces as you can.
    For example, oceanartwork.com and oceanartwork.com.au
For Australian businesses especially, I recommend .au extensions, because this namespace is governed by an Australian regulatory body, auDA.

These are just a few tips you can read a more comprehensive report here from Web guru; Dr. Ralph F. Wilson at Web Marketing Today

It really doesnt matter who you register your domain name through as long as you are the Registrar (owner of the domain name) and you have access to an admin panel where you can change or input the DNS settings.

You can search for and register your domain name here

I recommend registering your new domain name with Bluehost .
Or more specifically getting in on their great deal with Hosting which gives you a domain name for free!!

BlueHost offers dependable hosting
with unlimited disk space and bandwidth. Their shared hosting plan includes a free domain name, and their plan offer of just $6.95/month is well above average compared to most web hosts.
You can host unlimited web sites with Bluehost on this plan…
Their support is second to none.

And you can install as many WordPress sites as you want using their great Auto install program called Simple Scripts

I will be posting a more comprehensive review on Bluehost in the next few days

New WordPress Video Tutorials

There are  a lot of WordPress Tutorial videos on Youtube.
Unfortunately most of them deal with versions prior to 2.7.

For those who dont know WordPress version 2.7  saw a completely new back end admin interface.

The new interface is nothing like previous versions..
It is actually much better!!.
So it would only be confusing to someone new to Worpress
Even though the menu has the same commands or links in versions prior to 2.7 the menu was at the top of the screen and now it is in a column down the left hand side of the screen.

I have dedicated a page to  these WordPress Youtube tutorials and I will be adding more as I find them.
And even adding my own.

Click here or on the Video tab in the menu at the top of the page.

Testing your web site design in different browsers.

Cross browser compatibility is surely one of the biggest nightmares that a web designer has to deal with.

Theres nothing worse than spending hours on a design, only to find that its layout is all over the place when you open it in a different browser.

As well as different brands of web browser……
There are still plenty of punters out there on the web, that are using older versions of browsers that dont support newer W3C standards.

IE6 in particular has always been a thorn in my side.

With around 20% of vistors to my site still using Internet Explorer 6.
To me, it still seems worthwhile to get it to be cross browser compatible.

Recently I was searching through a design forum looking for answers and  asking a question about …you guessed it.
Cross Browser Compatibility. The moderator of the forum didnt even bother answering my query and simply stated
” I stopped coding for IE6 years ago”
luckily I manged to fix the problem and didnt need his help when it got down to business.

So when should you stop worrying about browser compatibility??
It really is totally a matter of your own personal choice.

I use and recommend browsershots.org to test all  my new designs and wordpress themes.
It can be a little slow at times loading the screenshots…but it is FREE!!
Browsershots.org gives you the choice of testing your site in over 100 browsers.
You can also pay for a priority account, for around $30 U.S a year.
Which is really cheap if your going to be using it a lot.

This will give you  much faster loading screenshots etc

I hope you find this information useful.
